Description
Referencing natural phenomenon and biblical accounts of the first human act of murder.
Siblicide is a naturally occurring evolutionary practice involving the sacrificial slaying of an infant by its sibling and is usually driven by environmental factors such as resource scarcity.
The act of murder in humans can also be attributed to environmental factors but is more commonly associated with cognitive responsive emotions such as greed or jealousy.
In this work I have combined the innocence and brutality of natural systems with that of our “civilised” world. The symbolic imagery of one infant pushing the other out of the nest to its demise draws from biblical accounts of Cain and Abel. The inclusion of avian features represents natural systems. (birds such as Egrets and the Masked Booby are commonly associated with siblicide ) .
P(m) = {1-Mv/m if m˃mv, refers to the mathematical algebraic equation representing the cost Vs benefit of siblicide on a brood’s reproductive success.
The futuristic context of the work coupled with theatrical natural aesthetics, combine to produce a dynamic freeform sculpture capturing the raw statistical nature of survival in the wild in contrast to the calculated cold heartedness of human behaviour in the artificial “civilized” world.
